Polycystic ovarian syndrome / polycystic ovarian disorder (PCOD) is a hormonal problem that occurs in women. Due to today’s modern lifestyle, women neither eat on time nor sleep nor can take care of their health. For this reason, this problem is increasing and more than millions of women are affected by PCOD.
This disease is common in women and girls nowadays. Till a few years ago this problem was more prevalent among women in the age group of 30-35, but now this problem has become common even among school-going girls.
What is PCOD / PCOS?
PCOD i.e. polycystic ovary disease has become a common problem in women. In this disease, due to hormones, there are small cysts in the ovary. These cysts cause massive hormonal changes in women. Hair growth in unwanted places – Due to excess production of the male hormone androgen in the woman, there can be a lot of changes in the body like growing more hair on the face and many parts of the body. The growth of excess hair on the body and face is called hirsutism. It may cause unwanted hairs to grow on the face or chin, breasts, abdomen, or in places such as the thumb and toes.
Hair loss – Increasing the number of androgen hormones in the body can lead to thinning of the scalp and can lead to hair loss.
Weight gain – Women struggle with weight gain due to PCOD or have difficulty in losing weight.
Pimples or oily skin – Pimple and oily skin problems can occur due to hormonal changes.
Trouble in sleeping – Trouble sleeping and feeling tired all the time. Also, there may be a headache problem due to change of hormone.
Trouble in getting pregnant – PCOD is one of the leading causes of infertility.
Period problems – Periods can be irregular or periods stop coming for several months. Or there can be very heavy bleeding during periods.

There is no specific treatment for polycystic ovary disorder. PCOD is treated to reduce and eliminate its symptoms and preventing further complications. Treatment depends on the individual woman’s symptoms.

- You need to eat a well-balanced diet.
- Many women with PCOD are troubled by overweight or obesity. Some symptoms can be relieved by reducing just 5% to 10% of body weight. It also helps to make your periods more regular. Also helps in fixing ovulation problems.
- However, PCOD can cause diabetes, so your doctor may ask you to limit foods that contain starch or sugar. Instead, eat fibre-rich food.
- Exercise daily because exercise also helps in controlling insulin and will also help in losing weight.
For a woman to reduce or eliminate PCOD symptoms, the most important thing is to take care of your food. Eat food at the right time. Also, nutritious elements should be consumed in the diet. Do not consume junk food, sweets, oily food, cold drinks etc. If you cannot stop, then reduce their intake gradually.
With PCOD, you can make these changes in your diet –
- Eat foods with low carbohydrates and avoid eating foods full of carbohydrates such as sugar, sweets, snacks and bread.
- Eat a balanced diet, try to take more protein in your diet, like cheese, eggs, meat or fish.
- Eat whole grains such as brown rice, ragi or oats
- Eat fibre-rich things such as fruits, sprouts and salads
- Eat cinnamon as it can stop the insulin level in the body from rising.
- Avoid foods that are high in glycemic, such as potatoes, white bread, etc.
- Consumption of liquorice causes a decrease in male hormones present in the woman’s body, which relieves the problem of PCOD.
